It’s the final countdown…

September 05 2011

and cue cheesy 80’s music…

Okay all hair bands aside. The countdown has begun. Only one month left until my friend’s October 1st wedding. If I haven’t mentioned before, my friend Reanna and her fiancé are very talented musicians. Reanna is a off off Broadway singer and Dom is a part of Grammy award winning band The Carolina Chocolate drops. Here is a picture of the Grammy award. It was so awesome to get to see it up close!

Anyhoo, when my friend was trying to think of unique inexpensive boutonnieres I found inspiration via the web and came up with this….

A tutorial on how to create DIY wedding Guitar Pick Boutonnieres.

Guitar pick boutonnieres! Fitting no? For the bride-to-be it was love at first sight! After a trip to hobby lobby I got to work. Yep I’ve got a tutorial for ya but let’s start with the supplies you will need shall we?

*Side note- I also got these pins…

pins

that are not pictured above because it took some time to track them down, I finally found them at walmart. And I used sandpaper I already had on hand which is also not pictured above.

First I needed to sand off the logos on each guitar pick.

See how when you flip them to just the colored side you can still see the logos seeping through? This was driving.me.nuts! It had to go.

The sanding worked like a charm, but it did leave the surface scratched up a bit. Since that side wouldn’t be seen it didn’t matter that it was a hot mess after I got through with this stage.

Next, I played around with the arrangement of the guitar picks to see which floral pattern looked best.

After we settled on a design I used super glue to adhere the guitar pick “petals” together.

Next I had to untangle the floral picks. They came bundled together with wire like this…

After I freed them and had individual sticks, I glued them at the base of my “petals”.

As the boutonniere began to take shape I wrapped the floral pick with ribbon and also super glued that into place. Lastly I used super glue to glue on the pin to secure the boutonniere. I let the super glue dry for 24 hours before testing out the pin on the backside.

Okay you ready for the big reveal? TADA!

My friend requested that the boutonnieres for the ladies (mother of the bride etc.)  look a tad different from the men’s so I chose to use these beaded loop thingies.

So here is the ladies version…um…dido TADA?

Didn’t they turn out lovely? And for those wondering what the couple saved by creating their own boutonnieres (er…having a friend create their boutonnieres) and going with a non-traditional route sans real flowers here is a budget breakdown for ya:
